Having an apartment of your own is a dream come true. Being independent and free gives one a sense of fulfillment. But owning an apartment also means being responsible not only to its cleanliness and well being, but also its security and safety.

Security and safety go hand in hand, and should be everybody's concern - not just your landlord's concern only. It is only proper that you yourself should take care of your investment. After all, you should be aware that security can only be maximized if you have enough knowledge, and willing to invest for it. Here are some tips and suggestions on how to keep your apartment safe and secure.

You can protect yourself by simple practice of always locking the main door. One should never forget the importance of precise and good door locks and dead bolt. You can also install a viewer (a peep hole) to insure that you know who you are taking to. As an added protection, you can have a door alarm installed. Automatic door alarms sounds off and alarms the moment an intruder trips it off. Door alarms are inexpensive, handy and easy to install.

Just like your door, your window should be secured as well. Be sure that the locking mechanism works perfectly and is easy to lock when you shut it. Make sure you check each of the windows to spot if there are broken locks. You can also set-up a window alarm. Just like any ordinary alarm it is easy to install and is simple to install. Window grills should also be strengthened. Having multiply security system insures total security.

Having a back door may pose certain hazards. Despite of it, remember always to lock it when going in and out of the house. You can secure it with a dead bolt lock, and a chain-lock at the same time. Dual lock systems work well at any door. As an added protection, install it with automatic alarm system. Alarm systems are suggested because they are lightweight and practical.

It is also good to have your apartment well-lit. Nothing scares off any burglar more than a well-lit area when one can see well and identify the people around the apartment. It is good to make it a habit to leave a light turned on at all times. A good lighting system is practical, although it may require professional help.

To sum it up, it is not enough simply to have your apartment safe, real security begins within your immediate neighborhood. Encourage your neighbors to help in security measures by reporting any suspicious looking individual and burglars sneaking in around. Try also to guarantee the help of your landlord by installing cameras and lighting dark areas. It is good to know and take note of the telephone number of the nearest police station, so you don't only ensure personal safety of your home and family but the safety of others as well.
